Now I am a music lover at heart, from: David Bowie, Bod Dylan, Freddie Mercury, to dance music like Lady GaGa (Yes I said it but don't leave just yet!) and wanted a music producing software that would deliver what I was looking for. There are so many music software programs that promise to be just like the equipment you get in expensive record studios, but all you get is the expensive pricing. It was, most importantly, user friendly (because I didn't know what I was doing at first honestly) and it even catered to the veterans at music producing. The Arctic Monkeys and a lot of other new bands that make a splash these days are touted as bands that have done it on their own, and although I do think that The Arctic Monkeys were pretty popular, I also tend to think that a lot of these other stories on the Internet about bands that have broken big without a label are circulated by the band's label or publicist themselves to gain free publicity, after they have already signed them.

The way the story usually goes is that the Band sold 1000's of CDs and downloads and then got signed because of their popularity, but in a lot of cases it does seem strange that no one ever actually heard too much about the band and their huge sales until they got signed. I usually take most these claims with a pinch of salt, it is just the latest (and fast becoming overused) publicity gimmick.

Should I Get On iTunes Or Not?

So what does all this have to do with the original question, is it worth getting your music on iTunes and the other online retailers?

Making stories up about a band is just another way of getting noticed and playing the game, and everyone lies to make a name for themselves, but I think the short answer to the original question is yes. Getting on the big online retailers is another angle that you need these days, and having a professional quality album up on iTunes makes you look like a proper band, whether you are one or just someone in their bedroom with a laptop.

I would also like to add a word of caution at this point, you will not automatically sell loads of mp3s and make a fortune overnight just by getting on iTunes, but if you have the material ready then why not go for it? You have to also remember to still keep working on every other aspect of promotion and marketing as well if you are to stand any chance of success.

I have found that once you have a real product to sell or even give away in any sort of business, if you work at promoting it properly then things will eventually start to happen. People will definitely take you more seriously as a band if you can point them to iTunes than if you are just a guy with a CD-R and a homemade sleeve.

There are several companies that specialize in getting your CD into the big online stores, like Magnatune and CD Baby, but the company that I want to shamelessly plug is Tunecore. I like the idea of not paying too much money for their services, retaining my rights, keeping 100% of the profits made and also that my CD (and Video) is available on iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon MP3, eMusic, Sony Connect, MusicNet and Napster.

The majority of music (if not all of it) that you hear is copyrighted, which means an individual or group of individuals hold the exclusive right to copy, license, or otherwise use a musical work. Generally those individuals are the people who created and produced the music. Whether it is from the radio, on a CD, or legally downloaded in the form of an MP3 file, the music is copyrighted. Companies (namely retail businesses and corporations with on hold music) are not allowed to play music from compact discs, the radio, or anything other media form for their clients and customers without obtaining the proper licenses first. Software Piracy and Internet Pirates Going to Prison
Software piracy gave a sharp awakening to copyright infringement counsels around the world. Software piracy law efforts backed by the SIIA (Software and Information Industry Association), the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), the Business Software Association (BSA) and of course Microsoft, are running fast and furious to intimidate internet pirates and quash any and all efforts of internet piracy, software piracy and copyright infringement on software, music and film. Efforts at suppressing internet piracy, copyright infringement and software piracy are running full speed ahead.

Illegal copyright infringement and software piracy can result in civil or criminal trials. Prior to 1978, copyright infringement could be subject to state or federal laws. However, in 1976, Congress codified Section 17 of the United States Code to limit copyright infringement to the federal courts effective January 1, 1978 - essentially dissolving the power of the states to prosecute cases of copyright infringement - the legal claim for software piracy and internet piracy. Sentencing for federal crimes have been historically more punitive than that for state crimes and have been under legislative and judicial scrutiny for decades.

The Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 led to Federal Sentencing Guidelines that were enacted in 1987 - presumably to develop consistency in sentencing. In 2004 the Federal Sentencing Guidelines were struck down by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court decided the federal guidelines were advisory, but not mandatory. Hence, anyone subject to federal sentencing for copyright infringement, software piracy or internet piracy could receive a substantially higher sentence than the federal guidelines suggest - and presumably lower. But apparently "advisory" is still mandated. In the USA vs. Kononchuck software piracy case which involved pirated Microsoft software, the original sentencing judge was lenient and sentenced one of the defendants to only probation and house arrest. The prosecutor appealed the light sentence, and the case was brought back to court for new, harsher, sentencing. These types of decisions surely contribute to the 2.3 million people that are imprisoned today - up from 1.1 million in 1990. Pew Research reports 1 in every 100 adults in America is in prison.

The US Sentencing Guidelines Manual (U.S.S.G.) lists the mitigating factors that are taken into consideration for internet piracy, software piracy and copyright infringement in Section 2B5.3. Because copyright infringement is an economic offense, the retail cost of the software pirated and the number of items pirated determine the severity of the crime. The Courts use a "base" crime level, and adjust the sentencing accordingly with the elements of the case. Copyright Infringement starts off at "level 8," and only one count of a value under $2000 could bring a sentence anywhere from 0 to 6 years (as determined in the 2007 Federal Sentencing Guidelines Chapter Five Part A Sentencing Table). With just one or two "marks" against a defendant, the minimum jail times goes up to 4 years. "Uploading" is 2 points - and increases the sentence to 4-10 years.

Software piracy, internet piracy and copyright infringement prison terms are still undergoing scrutiny during the appeals process. Despite strict sentencing in copyright infringement, Internet piracy is far from being quashed. MarketingVox has reported a 3% increase in illegal music downloads over the last couple years, even as prison for piracy escalates. Copyright infringement litigation will be tossed and turned in the courts with unexpected prison sentences and damage awards until the district courts develop consistent sentencing precedents based on the motivations of the piracy and severity of the crimes that adhere to the constitutional principals. Until Congress, the Courts and the Constitution speak the same language, Internet pirates are likely to be facing some federal jail time in the years to come.

Vital Force is the latest release from Smooth Jazz Superstar 3rd Force, and is another great one by this talented musician.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

3rd Force possesses the characteristic of being able to bowl you over with their talent alone. The kind of group I really enjoy listening to.

I’m of the opinion that Vital Force is certainly 3rd Force’s best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it’s a collection that even the casual Smooth Jazz fan can appreciate and enjoy.

While the entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 1, In The Full Moon Light, track 3, You Gotta Be Real, and track 7, Set Your Self Free.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 5, Lift Me Higher. This is a great track!

Day By Day is the latest release from Pop Artist Yolanda Adams, and is another winner by this talented musician.

Unfortunately, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Day By Day. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you’ve got one of Yolanda Adams’s most impressive releases ever.

If you’re a Yolanda Adams fan, or just a fan of Pop music this is a CD your collection simply should not be without.

While the entire album is outstanding some of my favorites are track 3, Someone Watching Over You, track 5, Day By Day, and track 11, I'm Grateful.

Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Once Again gets. Once Again stated simply is one of John Legend’s best CDs to date.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Once Again is a pleasantly varied, mix of 12 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly outstanding artist. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are his own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

John Legend possesses the characteristic of being able to bowl you over with his talent alone. The kind of artist I really enjoy listening to.

Listen and I think you’ll agree that the song choices are excellent and the production is simply outstanding.

While this entire CD is outstanding some of my favorites are track 3, Stereo, track 4, Show Me, and track 7, Slow Dance.

Over the years, the slogan/motto for America used to be; "baseball; hot-dogs; apple pie," but not anymore. Because of all the cheating in sports...it now becomes "hot-dogs; apple pie; music and humor! The American people are getting fed up with the cheating in sports, which in unacceptable, and not good for our kids. I rarely watch sporting events anymore because of all the cheating that goes on.

There can be no cheating in music, because if you can't carry a tune...you're finished. There can be no cheating in humor, because you're either funny or your're not. In humor...believe me...I have plenty of "egg on my face;" and I've put my "foot in my mouth," plenty of times; and I've eaten plenty of "crow," countless times during my lifetime. (yum-yum)

NOSTALGIA;

With respect to music...this generation has to be the most incredible generation to grow up in. With the sock-hops of the 1950's; the street dances of the 1960's; and the different styles of dances; the twist; the pony; the chicken; the even the Freddie, etc. Many of the songwriters and producers of that time, were only teenagers and in their early twenties...Amazing! And, many of the songs written and produced back then, are still popular in the year 2009. An incredible burst of talent during this generation!

I remember when I was in the hospital for over three months, and there was no music in my life. One of the first things I did when I was discharged was to turn on a radio, to listen to some music. I missed music so much, and the sound of it quickly soothed me, and was therapeutic for me, as it helped my to heal as well.

To have God-given talent, is not just in music, or in the arts and sports, etc. Talented people are in the medical fields and in the technological fields as well. Take Bill Gates of Microsoft, for example. He does not have a college degree, but yet he has managed to be so successful and the wealthiest people in the world. He is self-taught and is gifted with the ability in all those difficult fields such as math; engineering; physics and computer science, etc.

To be a successful songwriter, has to be one of the toughest tasks to do in life. After all, we're talking about creativity...songs that have never been written before. In engineering and physics...there are limits...things that can and can't be done! In creativity...there are no limits...it depends on what the mind brings to the table, etc.

God-given talent...that's what so many people have, in so many fields, and they seem to do it with such ease...or at least it seems that way. Most of us couldn't play the piano like Liberace; Jerry Lee Lewis or JoAnn Castle of the Lawrence Welk Show. How do they do it?

I can understand a tiny bit about how it works and what it means, because, for over 50 years, people have told me that I should have been a stand-up comedian. But, that will never be possible, because I suffer, from what many people across the country suffer from...stage fright! I could never get in front of a group and be funny...so because of this, I now have to settle for being a "sit-down" comedian and the computer on the Internet.

Robin Williams; Billy Crystal; and Bill Cosby are some of the funniest people in the world, and much of it is so spontaneous....without a script...how do they do it?

Other than telling jokes, which anybody can do...a situation happens in someone's life...and there is an automatic reaction to it...and that reaction is funny...how does that happen? I have no idea! I promise one thing to the reeder...their will be no humer in this peace! (promise?)

That's because this piece is not about me and humor...it's about music and songwriting! Paul McCartney (Beatles) can't read or write music...how does he do it? The extent of my songwriting career consists of two songs I wrote recently, and I hoped they would do well on the charts.

The first song, which turned out to be a bomb...was entitled, "I Left My Heart in Algodones." People in the music business wouldn't take it, because I was told it was too similar to the hit song by somebody named Tony Bennett, and his hit song, "I Left My Heart in San Fransico." Who is this guy Tony Bennett anyway? What does he have, that I don't have? Anyway...my first song went nowhere!

I was not discouraged...and for for my second song. I wrote a little piece entitled, "Won't You Wear My Rope Around Your Neck." The same thing happened with this song...the people in the music business, told me that it was too similar to the hit record by Elvis what's-his-name...a hit song he recorded by the name of, "Won't You Wear My Ring Around Your Neck." How can can a person wear a ring around their neck? They must have an awfully skinny neck! Oh well...two songs...two failures. I thought seriously about giving up my songwriting career. (promise, Jer?)

In a 50 year explosion of music during the rock and roll era, I don't know if anybody can list their top ten favorite groups and individual singers. There are simply too many to choose from, but I'll try. Here is a list of my top ten rock groups;

1) Electric Light Orchestra; (ELO); I love this group's music since I first heard them in the mid-1970's. An English group, and arrived on the scene in the post-British Invasion era. With over 100 million records in sales, this group is unique, as they use string instruments, such as the violins and cellos in their songs, such as Evil Woman; Livin' Thing; Hold On Tight; Strange Magic; Telephone Line; Don't Get Me Down; Do Ya and many more. Their creativity and imagination shows with their ELO spaceship (stage) and it zooms in and all the colorful lighting, with lights blinking...simulating a spaceship. This group is so unique and different from all the others! High marks for this group.

2) Chicago; Over 40 years in the business for this group and still going strong. They, too, have their own style like ELO, only they use the brass instruments in their songs...like the trumpets and trombones. This group gets high marks from me in their music and their staying power as well.

3) Bee-Gees; (brothers Gibb); I first saw this group in 1969 on the Tonight Show. I was already familiar with the songs and harmony of the Beach Boys and the Four Seasons, but this group of brothers from England, was something else in their songwriting and harmony, etc. At one time, there were four brothers...but the younger one (Andy) sadly committed suicide. He had hosted Solid Gold for a short time.

The rest of my top ten look something like this;

4) Fleetwood Mac;
5) Moody Blues;
6) CCR; (Creedence Clearwater Revival);
7) Eagles;
8) Rolling Stones);
9) Four Seasons;
10) the Chipmunks

My favorite male singers include; 1) Kenny Rogers; 2) Gordon Lightfoot; 3) Fats Domino;

My favorite female singers include; 1) Anne Murry; 2) Olivia Newton-John; 3) Alice Cooper;

All these groups and individual singers are so-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o talented!

"Do I play a musical instrument, you may ask? The only musical instrument I play is the radio...and I don't even play that well, either!

Recently, I wrote my final song (hooray) and the same thing happened...the people in the music business, told me that it sounded too much by the hit song by ELO entitled, "Do Ya." Just so you'll know...the song was entitled, "See Ya" which means that I'm finished in the music business!

Waren Zevon, very talented Rock artist has released his latest album titled Wind and Wow! It's good.

The CD kicks off with an outstanding track, Dirty Life And Times, that I anticipate will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It’s a really nice track.

Waren Zevon possesses the characteristic of being able to bowl you over with his talent alone. The kind of artist I really enjoy listening to.

Overall Wind is an outstanding release. Quite possibly Waren Zevon's best to date. Really spectacular from beginning to end. If you're even mildly into Rock music you'll enjoy this CD.

While this entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 1, Dirty Life And Times, track 3, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, and track 6, Prison Grove.

I am always being asked about the value of putting music up for sale on the big online retailers like iTunes or Rhapsody, for small or unknown bands. I think for bands these days the chances of getting signed and landing a big deal are pretty slim, but then they have never been that great anyway, or not as far as I can remember in the 25+ years I have been in the Music Business.

Web 2.0

With the onslaught of web 2.0 the days of putting a website up and leaving it there are gone forever, you need to use every angle just to get on the same level as everyone else. Every band is on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and every other social networking service out there, so you need to get yourself on a level playing field and then also think about other less conventional ways of being noticed.

Arctic Monkeys

The Arctic Monkeys and a lot of other new bands that make a splash these days are touted as bands that have done it on their own, and although I do think that The Arctic Monkeys were pretty popular, I also tend to think that a lot of these other stories on the Internet about bands that have broken big without a label are circulated by the band's label or publicist themselves to gain free publicity, after they have already signed them.

The way the story usually goes is that the Band sold 1000's of CDs and downloads and then got signed because of their popularity, but in a lot of cases it does seem strange that no one ever actually heard too much about the band and their huge sales until they got signed. I usually take most these claims with a pinch of salt, it is just the latest (and fast becoming overused) publicity gimmick.

Should I Get On iTunes Or Not?

So what does all this have to do with the original question, is it worth getting your music on iTunes and the other online retailers?

Making stories up about a band is just another way of getting noticed and playing the game, and everyone lies to make a name for themselves, but I think the short answer to the original question is yes. Getting on the big online retailers is another angle that you need these days, and having a professional quality album up on iTunes makes you look like a proper band, whether you are one or just someone in their bedroom with a laptop.

I would also like to add a word of caution at this point, you will not automatically sell loads of mp3s and make a fortune overnight just by getting on iTunes, but if you have the material ready then why not go for it? You have to also remember to still keep working on every other aspect of promotion and marketing as well if you are to stand any chance of success.

I have found that once you have a real product to sell or even give away in any sort of business, if you work at promoting it properly then things will eventually start to happen. People will definitely take you more seriously as a band if you can point them to iTunes than if you are just a guy with a CD-R and a homemade sleeve.

There are several companies that specialize in getting your CD into the big online stores, like Magnatune and CD Baby, but the company that I want to shamelessly plug is Tunecore. I like the idea of not paying too much money for their services, retaining my rights, keeping 100% of the profits made and also that my CD (and Video) is available on iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon MP3, eMusic, Sony Connect, MusicNet and Napster.

The original sound that you hear in the patches is produced by the oscillators, and is then fed through the synthesizer's signal path. If you set oscillation to a very low pitch, you will end up with gaps because the waveform is continuously dependant on the speed pitch of the note. So the different sounds are created by the shape of the waveform, which is the product of oscillation.

There are some common oscillator waveforms.

For a sharp biting type sound, you need the saw wave. It is called this because its shape is like those on a saw blade

To obtain a soft mild tone then you will want the Sine Wave, which is shaped like a horizontal "S"; it has a smooth up and down shape to it.

A specific color of noise will produce noise although it is not really a waveform

To get that sound that simulates a hollow reed you need the square wave. This is distinguishable by its near perfect square appearance.

A variance to the square wave is the pulse wave, although it is only half as wide. It has the interesting ability to have a modulated width. Perhaps you have heard this as being referred to as the Pulse Width Modulation.

To find a happy medium between the saw and sine wave you would require the triangle wave, which oddly enough is shaped like a triangle.

Most often a synthesizer has 2-3 oscillators. Being as that is the case, you can do some interesting stuff by mixing the waveforms together. Plus you can tune them so they are different from each other. It can be tuned in semitones, octaves or in cents. A swirling untuned sound is created by many oscillators which are cents apart from each other. Cents is a 100th of a semitone.

There is an oscillator known as a low frequency oscillator. Its frequencies are undetectable unless you physically tune it into a regular hearing range. Its job is to modulate the pitch of the oscillator or the filter frequency. The start stop of the waveform is quite noticeable because the LFOs are like the oscillators in that they still use standard waveforms. When used properly for example the sine wave allows you to hear an increasing -decreasing sound of the wave shape. Animation and moving texture will be the end result for your synthesizer sound if done properly.

How to Form Your Own Music Band
Every aspiring musician dreams of joining a band. You could join an already existing band or form your own. If you join a band, you will be performing immediately, but as a new entrant, may be accorded a minor role in concerts. Sometimes joining a band, rather than being your great musical dream, could just be synonymous to tagging along with the rest of the members. However, joining an existing band also has many advantages:

* The name and reputation of the band is already established
* You train under professionals and hone your skill
* The experience is invaluable
* You may, with time be elevated to the position of main singer/guitarist

But maybe you want to have your own band to sing or play the guitar/drums to your heart's content?

First of all you have to make up your mind whether you want to form a band that includes your friends with whom you would perform periodically in clubs and social gatherings - an arrangement in which you could have loads of fun, or whether you would play along with professionals such that you could rake in some moolah as well.

Naturally, the best part of creating a band would be your significant role in it. You decide what to play/sing and you remain well in the limelight. The tough part is waiting for your band to get the recognition and popularity for becoming a successful venture. To make this success possible, there is a lot you have to plan and execute. It always helps to have a clear and comprehensive idea about what you have to do. Let's break up your band-creating endeavor into a few achievable phases of action.

The Goal: First of all visualize where you will go, a year from now,..two years... five years from now. Within this framework (and with a reasonable allowance for contingencies) break up the contribution of every performer you plan to induct into the band. Also, think of what kind of music you would like to perform

* Placing an ad in the papers, requesting applicants to send a recording along with their details
* keep in touch with other musicians you meet at rock shows or similar performances; approach them to find the right people for your band
* Placing a similar ad on the Internet
* Become a member in online musical forums, participate in discussions and post your request
* Interview the candidates, just as you were appointing them for a job. Ask all the important questions, about their ambition, playing ability, the probability of moving away from your city, why they want to join a band, etc
* The answers will indicate which of the applicants are committed to cause of the band. Select them prudently
* Do not compromise on the quality you expect from the applicants

Somewhere between visualizing the band and finding its members, try and find a nice name for your band. The name must convey your uniqueness and appeal to the public for its sheer ingenuity.

Writing songs: Writing songs and composing music is an ongoing task. You may have started writing the song long back, or maybe one of your band members is a gifted writer. For creating appealing songs you have to

* Read extensively to get ideas for lyrics
* Keep writing and writing, until you hit on the right words
* Keep a Thesaurus beside you for a greater source for words
* Buy a rhyming book to help you find the most apt words
* Listen to hundreds of CDs to help you identify the general style of the song
* Attend as many musical shows to get a feel of what is popular

However, limit the use of the these tools only to get you started; what you finally create must be

* Fresh
* Original
* Sincere and
* Appealing

Equipment: Plan and acquire the equipment as per your budget and requirement. Resort to attractive Special Effects or your music performances. Write down your plan of performance and practice schedule; make sure all members of the band have a copy of this. That way each of you could come prepared for every practice session.

Copywriting: Once the song is ready, apply for its copyright, if you plan to use it in a performance. Copyright gives you the sole right over the song. You have to register the song with the United States Copyright Office. If you have more than one song to copyright, solicit the help of a lawyer, who can help you get on with the work. * Hook up with a charitable organization, and play for their special occasions; this way your band gets recognized
* Approach local clubs to allow you to perform on their premises
* Hand over copies of your music to local DJs, RJs to play on their shows
* Play in the local park to create an awareness about your band
* While you are busy with all these popularization endeavors, keep in mind that you cannot compromise the quality of music. You have to keep on practicing, creating more songs, and try to reach high levels of perfection.

Practice and perseverance lead to perfection that will bring in more invites for your band.

If a license is needed for the specific type of music you want to perform, get one without delay, and well in advance. As money starts coming in, you may need the services of a CPA (Certified Pubic Accountant) to help manage it.

Welcome back! This article is intended for people looking to get started with recording music on a home computer. It is the second part in a series of articles.

So, your Tower of Power is ready to get a nervous system. Plenty of choices out there, but first, this is where you must think on "How you plan on using it".

Plan A If you're a musician looking to lay down some tracks, maybe add drums, do a little singing and be able to "pull off" something on a professional level (Demo, etc) you're going to want a program like (PC) Cubase, Sonar. or (MAC) Logic.

Plan B If you just want to tinker with jingles, or not necessarily needing of the "Pro" sound. Go with a program like ACID. This program is great for arrangements and let's you "paint" in measures and bars of music. You can use loops (sold everywhere) to create some pretty awesome compositions. This program is great for writers and arrangers.

Plan C You're inching to make yourself some beats and grooves. Maybe you're playing with the DJ side of music's industry. LIVE or Reason are the two main programs for you.

All of the programs listed above are know as sequencers. They all have looping capabilities and are the second step with the creation of your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) because, that's what we were building right? All these great programs can be used in conjunction with one another too.

THE COMPUTER SOFTWARE/HARDWARE COMBO:

After you pick your game plan (sequencer) from above, there's still more needed to create a "band" per say. Let's take a look at the most common ways to make music and release your inner passion.

LOOPS: They come in all sounds and sizes. (i.e. Drums, basses, guitars, birds and of course, car horns). If you're working with a program like ACID, you're going to want PLENTY of loops. Starting with a simple drum loop can inspire a whole composition. Then, add some bass and record your guitar over the top of it all and there you have it, your 'Mega Hit".

One word of caution here, when buying loops on-line or from E-bay be sure to look for seller that offer 'Original Content" you'd be surprised at how many times you can re-purchase a loop collection if you're not careful.

VSTI's Here is some GREAT technology (not to be confused with VST's we'll talk more about VST's in article three). These are "software" instruments that can be used (played) inside your sequencer. By using a MIDI controller or keyboard, (not the one in front of you) you can create the sound of a guitar, bass or even a trumpet. A great program to get you started is SampleTank. This program offers an array of instruments and sound patterns. (Again, I wish these companies paid me)

NOTE: Knowing "how to play keyboard" (or any of the other instruments mentioned) is not necessarily required. If you do know, you're at an advantage here. If you haven't got a clue, you can learn so much "musically" from these types of programs. These helps keep the PASSION alive with your new hobby.

EXAMPLE: I am a drummer by nature ... but I can play a guitar and bass with my controllers. Give me the real thing and it's in front of the mirror only folks! E? ... G? ... A? ... I've learned these chords because of the software not because of learning the instruments. I can now talk to guitar players In "their language" and I can now tune a guitar! My point here is to never underestimate the power of the software; it is the ultimate learning tool.

CONTROLLERS: MIDI another techie term ... what's it mean? In a nutshell, (and how it's used in recording). It is a standardization of how hardware devices (MIDI controllers) communicate with software (VSTI's) If you would like to learn more (not needed to get started), google it. Here are some example MIDI controllers:

· A MIDI keyboard (the MOST common)

· Trigger Finger (if you can play drums on the desk, this one's for you.)

· TD-20 (a little more advanced and pricy)

INTERFACE: Hey! We covered that in article one already. Cool huh? The interface actually serves two main purposes incoming sound (guitar/vocals) and out going sound (to the speakers). This is the reason for the chapter title "Computer software/hardware combo" because now we have to talk about how we're going to hear our masterpiece.

SPEAKERS: Ok, stop right here for a moment. As keyboard confused us with a MIDI keyboard, we need a monitor to confuse us with monitors. Just kidding gang, but the correct term for your (once called) speakers is now monitors. Speakers are in cars, TV's and radio's (those aren't all gone yet are they?) Monitors are in recording studios. They are simply put, better for giving you a 'truer" sound. Monitors plug right into the interface typically marked as 'outs".

Let's cap off this article because we're almost ready to be making music.

So far we should have (or are ready to get) our:

· Computer system

· An interface

· Our sequencer of choice

· Loops or a VSTI

· Monitors

· Flaming PASSION

After you pick your game plan (sequencer) from above, there's still more needed to create a "band" per say. Let's take a look at the most common ways to make music and release your inner passion.

LOOPS: They come in all sounds and sizes. (i.e. Drums, basses, guitars, birds and of course, car horns). If you're working with a program like ACID, you're going to want PLENTY of loops. Starting with a simple drum loop can inspire a whole composition. Then, add some bass and record your guitar over the top of it all and there you have it, your 'Mega Hit".

One word of caution here, when buying loops on-line or from E-bay be sure to look for seller that offer 'Original Content" you'd be surprised at how many times you can re-purchase a loop collection if you're not careful.

VSTI's Here is some GREAT technology (not to be confused with VST's we'll talk more about VST's in article three). These are "software" instruments that can be used (played) inside your sequencer. By using a MIDI controller or keyboard, (not the one in front of you) you can create the sound of a guitar, bass or even a trumpet. A great program to get you started is SampleTank. This program offers an array of instruments and sound patterns. (Again, I wish these companies paid me)

NOTE: Knowing "how to play keyboard" (or any of the other instruments mentioned) is not necessarily required. If you do know, you're at an advantage here. If you haven't got a clue, you can learn so much "musically" from these types of programs. These helps keep the PASSION alive with your new hobby.

EXAMPLE: I am a drummer by nature ... but I can play a guitar and bass with my controllers. Give me the real thing and it's in front of the mirror only folks! E? ... G? ... A? ... I've learned these chords because of the software not because of learning the instruments. I can now talk to guitar players In "their language" and I can now tune a guitar! My point here is to never underestimate the power of the software; it is the ultimate learning tool.

CONTROLLERS: MIDI another techie term ... what's it mean? In a nutshell, (and how it's used in recording). It is a standardization of how hardware devices (MIDI controllers) communicate with software (VSTI's) If you would like to learn more (not needed to get started), google it. Here are some example MIDI controllers:

· A MIDI keyboard (the MOST common)

· Trigger Finger (if you can play drums on the desk, this one's for you.)

· TD-20 (a little more advanced and pricy)

INTERFACE: Hey! We covered that in article one already. Cool huh? The interface actually serves two main purposes incoming sound (guitar/vocals) and out going sound (to the speakers). This is the reason for the chapter title "Computer software/hardware combo" because now we have to talk about how we're going to hear our masterpiece.

SPEAKERS: Ok, stop right here for a moment. As keyboard confused us with a MIDI keyboard, we need a monitor to confuse us with monitors. Just kidding gang, but the correct term for your (once called) speakers is now monitors. Speakers are in cars, TV's and radio's (those aren't all gone yet are they?) Monitors are in recording studios. They are simply put, better for giving you a 'truer" sound. Monitors plug right into the interface typically marked as 'outs".

Let's cap off this article because we're almost ready to be making music.

So far we should have (or are ready to get) our:

· Computer system

· An interface

· Our sequencer of choice

· Loops or a VSTI

· Monitors

Subscribing to relevant RSS feed thus can give you all necessary information regarding stocks of your interest leaving other unnecessary information like what was said by the president of the exchange as he visited the broker houses. Similarly since subscribing to a RSS feed does not disclose your contacts and e-mail address, you may continue to be fed with updated information without any potential threat from unsolicited e-mails or irritating phone calls. How do you subscribe and read RSS?

Subscribing to a RSS feed is simple. You may subscribe to an RSS feed by clicking its icon wherever it appears. You may be taken to a link that needs to be fed into the software normally called a 'RSS Reader', 'Feed Reader' or 'Aggregator'. If you wish to get the RSS feed through the software on your desktop environment, all you need to do is copy and paste this link into the software's relevant feed. Alternatively, in a web environment, if you own a blog or website, you can copy and paste the XML code supplied by the RSS provider into the desired space of the website in authoring mode.

Unfortunately, with technology comes people that will manipulate this technology. Enter the age of the friend adder software. This let's the viewer first know that you have something of value to offer them, and that it's in their best interest to take a look at your site. Now, going back to the friends adder program. Yes, you can add friends. Target your market by looking through groups. Add people that will be interested in what you have to offer. Most importantly, be active in the online community. Don't just blindly use these programs to add friends. These networks are called SOCIAL networks for a reason. You must build a relationship with your viewer. Interact with the community. Add value to them, and you'll be recognized as a leader in your niche'.

Programming software, or middleware, usually provides tools to assist a developer in writing computer programs in a more convenient way. The tools include text editors, compilers, interpreters, linkers, debuggers, etc.

Application software is a subclass of computer software that employs the capabilities of a computer directly and thoroughly to a task that the user wishes to perform. This should be contrasted with system software which is involved in integrating a computer's various capabilities.

Typically the software does not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. In this context the term application refers to both the application software and its implementation. Multiple applications bundled together as a package are sometimes referred to as an application suite.

Microsoft Office, OpenOffice.org, and iWork 08, which bundle together a word processor, a spreadsheet, and several other discrete applications, are typical examples. The separate applications in a suite usually have a user interface that has some commonality making it easier for the user to learn and use each application.

Often they may have some capability to interact with each other in ways beneficial to the user. For example, a spreadsheet might be able to be embedded in a word processor document even though it had been created in the separate spreadsheet application.

User-written software tailors systems to meet the user's specific needs. In some types of embedded systems, the application software and the operating system software may be indistinguishable to the user, as in the case of software used to control a VCR, DVD player or microwave oven. It is important to note that this definition may exclude some applications that may exist on some computers in large organizations.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

R & B music fans will recognize some of the well known contributors on the project including Justin Timberlake, James Brown and Sting plus a few other notables as well.

Listen to Monkey Business and I believe you'll find there's not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, the production is simply outstanding, and Black Eyed Peas are in top form. If you're even mildly into R & B music you'll enjoy this album.

In this article we're going to review one of the great musicals of our time, which is actually a true story, The Sound Of Music.
The Sound Of Music is based on a very true a heroic story about the Von Trapp family. Briefly, since this article is really about music and not history, the Von Trapp family lived in Austria just prior to World War II. As Hitler took control of the country the family, totally against Hitler's annexation, fled the country and eventually settled in the United States. They were able to do this from the money they made as the Trapp Family Singers, and thus the focus of the musical.
Before The Sound Of Music hit Broadway with Mary Martin in the lead role that was made popular by Julie Andrews, it was first made into a very lavish movie in 1965. Julie Andrews had earlier gained her fame as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and was a natural for the part of Maria in this musical.
The words and music were written by the one and only team of Rogers and Hammerstein. The music in this production is some of the most popular music ever written for a musical. During the period when the movie was released there probably wasn't one school spring concert production that didn't feature songs from the movie.
The great music may have, in a sense, done the story a disservice. The truth is, the story is indeed a great one in itself, one of a family's fight for freedom. And in most cases a movie based on this theme would have been able to stand on its own merits. But the music was so fantastic that, in a sense, it overshadowed the story.
And if you want to take irony to an even higher level, the actual true musical highlight of The Sound Of Music was not even a song sung by Andrews or The Von Trapp Family themselves. It was a tune called "Climb Every Mountain" which was sung by the Mother Superior of the Convent that Maria came from. This song itself was probably one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, sung by a character who was hardly seen.
Yes, the story of how Maria wormed her way into the hearts of the family, especially the Baron, played brilliantly by Christopher Plummer, was beautiful and heartwarming. To see a man who was so against music in his home, because of the death of his first wife, transform into a man who made music and Maria his life was enough to bring out the tissues all by itself. Add to that the children who so grew to love Maria for giving them a reason to smile again and you have a story that you'd have to have the heart of a tree sloth not to love.
Oh and yes, there are the great tunes like the title track, "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," and of course the tear jerker "Edelweiss" which when the Baron tried to sing at the family's farewell concert just before they defected, got all choked up and Maria had to help him get through it. Yeah, you had to be there.
If you haven't seen this great movie, please rent the DVD for a weekend and watch it. Really watch it. It's one of those rare treats that won't disappoint.

$50,000 Solo Music Performer Guide

I have been playing in rock bands since the late 70's. I started young, and like many teenagers, had aspirations of being famous. My bands would play original music in the Boston night club circuit for little or no money, and the competition was so fierce, that you generally played for free just to get the booking.
This went on for years, until I moved to Southeastern Massachusetts. The whole music scene was different there. Very few bands played original music, but played cover songs of other peoples music. The best part? They actually got paid to play! Now any self respecting Boston band scene person will tell you that this is about as sacrilegious as one can get, but I figured that I would rather play music for a living than work a day job and play for free. Besides, I could always do the cover thing, and still form my own original band. Easier said than done.
To make any kind of living wage, we worked 5-6 nights every week. The overhead was huge. We owned trucks, professional equipment, road crew, had sound and lighting engineers to pay, then 5-6 band members. You had to have all of that because everyone else did. We all tried to outdo one another with a big light show, big equipment, flashy stage shows, and it got more and more expensive.
After several years of doing this, I got bored and tired. I decided to start a business and have a family. I could play music on the side for fun, and make a little extra money. I was at a restaurant one evening, and there was a guy playing guitar and singing. He had a really small set-up, he sounded good, and everyone seemed to enjoy him. I approached the manager of the restaurant and told him that I played guitar and sang, and would he consider me for a booking. He told me to come back on an off night and play for a half hour or so for $ 50, so he could hear what I sounded like.
Great. Now I actually had to get this thing going in a hurry. I borrowed a small PA from a friend and learned a set of material that I thought would go over well. This was the mid nineties, and 'unplugged' music was very popular. I put together 12 songs or so that I liked, and showed up on the specified night. It was great that all my equipment fit in the trunk, and I could actually lift it all without another person or two.
I set up, and in about 15 minutes, I was ready to go. Being an experienced guitar player and singer, I wasn't too worried about sounding bad, it just felt so odd without any other band members with me. I finished my set and packed up my gear. The manager came over and said that he had a cancellation 2 weeks from now, and would I be interested in playing. Of course I said yes, and asked what his budget was. Whenever he told me $250 for the night, I couldn't believe it! I had never made more than $150-175 a night with the most popular bands, and it was mentally and physically draining to do those shows. Here was an opportunity to play music, make twice the money, and virtually eliminate all of the stress and ridiculous situations that come with band life.
Okay, now I had to really get to work. I figured 12-14 songs per set, 4 sets...wow. Could I really learn 48 songs in 2 weeks? I already knew the set I had just played, and I was always able to pick up songs very quickly, so all I needed to do was to find the songs I wanted, get the lyrics, recordings and/or music and get to it. Well, it was a lot if work, but I pulled it off. The same place gave me a regular Sunday night and I was ready to go out and get more shows.
As a side note: If you are a musician, you may have noticed that I have not used the words 'gig' or 'axe' or any other music speak. I have stricken those words from my vocabulary many years ago...
So... I went to work making up posters, pictures, a biography, a song list and a CD sampler with songs I did, and assembled them into press kits. I started calling similar restaurants, as well as bars and clubs that offered similar entertainment. I dropped off the press kits, and sometimes would come in on an off night or attend an open mic so that the owner or manager could hear me. I started booking shows right away. Some of the venues were not what I wanted, nor was I what they wanted, but that is part of the process. Once you get a core group of venues, you ask to be put on regular rotation. This can be once a week, once a month, or every two months. The important thing is that you ask for another show after the completion of a successful performance. It shouldn't take any longer than 6 months or so to develop a good schedule.
Keep in mind that not every place will pay the same. The $250 jobs are really nice, but you'll do quite a few $100 and $150 jobs for a while, depending on the size of the venue, and your popularity. But it is still quite easy to earn $500 for 3 or 4 nights when starting out.
Building a fan base at every show is so important. I have mailing list sign-up sheets that I place at every table, and walk around between sets to say hello and ask people to sign up. This is a great way to get people to come back to see you the next time you perform.
You'll need a website, period. Web sites are cheap and easy to make with a little practice, or you can always have a friend do it for you. There are many articles and books on music marketing, so we won't get into too much of that here.
You need to be ultra professional. Drink moderately, if at all. Dress appropriately to the venue, set up quietly and as unnoticeably as possible, and always start off much softer than you would like. I have blown quite a few places because I was just too loud. Unfortunately, in most places, you are just background music. I try to keep the level down so that people can have a conversation without shouting. In certain rooms, you can always turn up later if the audience starts getting loud.
Get small equipment. There are many manufacturers of great sounding gear that is very portable. You don't always need to spend a lot either. I use pro quality, but moderately priced instruments and PA gear, as it will eventually become trashed. My first small PA was a little 4 channel head with two 10" cabinets with stands. The entire rig cost less than $ 300, and I still use it today for most small to medium sized rooms. For larger rooms, you'll need something a little bigger, and it is always nice to have one of the self-contained guitar/PA amps they are making these days for small coffeehouse and restaurant jobs. A friend of mine insisted on always bringing his $2000 Taylor guitar to shows. When one night a drunk patron fell into him and caused unmeasurable damage, he learned very fast.
After you've played around successfully for a year or so, built a fan base and proven yourself, you can start asking for more money. You'll still want the $ 100-150 jobs, especially if they helped you get started, but there are other ways to make money too. Doubles are a great way to make really good money in a day. Since most restaurants have their busy hours between 5 and 8:00 for example, it is totally possible for you to do a few of these each week, then pack up and do a club or bar show in the evening.
Specialty music for holidays and special events can also make you a lot of money. St. Patrick's Day, New Years, Weddings, Cinco De Mayo and other popular events will usually pay you twice what you normally make.
Then there are coffeehouses. These are more difficult to get into, but if you persevere, go to other artists shows and open mics, you will get to know the folks that run these. You'll also need to play mostly original music, so make sure you're up to that task. There are many successful coffeehouse artists that regularly make $1,000 or more for a performance.
Festivals are another good source of income. I do internet searches to see what is coming up, and get all the contact info. Keep in mind that many festivals are planned many months in advance, so if you don't make it in time for this year, make a note as to when to start contacting the organizers next time around.

A Guide To Reading Sheet Music

To read basic sheet music is not difficult once you have mastered the odd and peculiar looking notes and symbols and understand exactly what they mean.
Did you notice that the notes are written on a set of five horizontal lines? This is known as a staff. The vertical lines placed at intervals on the staff are used to divide the music into measures. Each measure contains a number of notes and the name of the note is determined by the horizontal line it is placed on or between. So, let's start at the bottom line and work upwards on each line. On the treble clef these notes are E, G, B, D, F., easily remembered by the little rhyme, Every Good Boy Deserves Favor. The notes located in the spaces between the lines are F, A, C, E which no doubt you have spotted, spells the word face.
On the left hand side at the beginning of the music there is a clef sign, either a treble clef where the notes are usually higher in tone or bass clef where the notes are lower. The clef dictates which octave the notes are to be played in. Alongside the clef you fill find two numbers written as a fraction and this is the time signature of the music and how many beats should be played to the measure.
The sharps or flats of the key the music is played in are shown in the key signature which is also near to the clef or sometimes, if it is just an odd note here or there to be played sharp or flat the symbol will be alongside the note itself. A b sign means a flat while a # symbol means a sharp and both of these are written against the notes required to be changed.
The notes are best described as such -
* A hollow oval called a semibreve. This is a whole note lasting for four beats or a measure.* A hollow oval with a stem is called a minim. This note takes two beats.* A solid oval with a stem is called a crotchet and lasts for one beat.* A black oval with a stem and flag is known as a quaver and last for half a beat.* A black oval with a stem and two flags is called a semi-quaver and takes just a quarter of a beat.
A note followed by a dot increases the value of the beat for that note.
Each of the above mentioned notes have a matching rest.
* The semibreve rest looks is a small black oblong sitting on top of a line.* The minim rest is identical but sits under the line.* The crochet rest looks is the sign of a curly vertical line.* The quaver rest looks like a vertically slanted line with a black circle on the top left with a loop.* The semi-quaver rest is similar to the quaver rest but with two black circles attached.
Crochets, quavers and semi-quavers are frequently attached to each other by one or two lines going across the stems. The stems of the notes can point upwards or downwards depending on whether they are above or below the center line on the staff. If the notes are joined by a curved line then only the first note is picked out but the count of the other notes is included.
These are just some guidelines for the beginner but there are many opportunities available on the Internet and in books showing numerous diagrams on how to read sheet music whatever your chosen instrument.

Choosing The Right Tools
There are lots of applications that can compress files. They are usually called "file archivers" or "archiving software". The speed, efficiency (compression ratio), file formats supported and all the other features vary greatly between various tools. Some archivers are free to use, others are "try before you buy", and some are even integrated in modern operating systems. How do you pick the best archiver for you?
There are several things that you need to consider when looking for a tool to compress files:
Compression ratio. Some archivers will produce smaller files. Many archiving tools will let you choose the level of compression and/or the format of the compressed file. Better compression often comes at the cost of decreased speed. Note that some types of files - e.g. music in the mp3 format and video files - can't be compressed effectively with general purpose archivers. A good file archiver should offer high compression ratio and the ability to set it manually, so as to give you some control over how long the archiving will take.
Supported file formats. Most people skip over this crucial point when choosing an archiver. While the most popular format is ZIP, you're likely to encounter many different (and sometimes better) file formats if you ever download files from the Internet. File archivers aren't the most expensive kind of software, so you can probably find a good shareware archiver in the $20-$50 range. Alternatively, if all you need is a simple tool that knows how to compress files (and decompress them later, too), you can opt for one of the freeware archivers. Though they may lack the shiny user interface and "extra" functions (which mundane users don't care about anyway), free archivers are often as good as commercial tools at compressing and decompressing files.
Personally, I recommend WinRAR - a shareware archiver. 7-Zip is a nice freeware alternative. As for the ever-so-popular WinZip, I believe it's just not worth the money. ZIP compression is inferior to both RAR and 7-Zip, plus almost any archiver can handle .zip files.
How To Compress Files Using 7-Zip
Yep, we're finally there - the actual step-by-step instructions on how to compress files! They're written for the free 7-Zip tool ( http://www.7-zip.org/ ) because I didn't want to pressure you into buying a commercial application.
Select the file(s) you want to compress and right-click it.
From the popup menu select 7-Zip -> Add to archive...
In the dialog box that will appear you need to set the archive name (the topmost textbox) and choose an archive format. The default is 7z, which offers great compression, but beware - if you're going to send the file to a friend or put it online, you should consider choosing the zip format which is better supported by other archivers.
You can also set the compression level; the default is "Normal" and i's okay in most cases.
Click "Ok" and wait while the file is compressed.
Done!

The music industry is on life support nowadays. It seems like there is nothing good being said about the industry at all. Everywhere you turn musicians are reminded about how the illegal music downloading, low album sales, minimal video play on national TV, radio playing only a handful of songs, and lets not forget a glut of awful music being made by people who just became musicians yesterday have all killed the music scene.
All of those things paint an extremely dismal picture, but I'm here to tell you that it's not all bad. True enough it's hard for even the hugest artist to sell a million records, which just a few short years ago could be done in a week or two. Artists aren't even selling gold, which is half of that, even months after their album comes out.
I'm here to tell you that all is not bad if you're willing to reprogram yourself on how the industry works. Here I'll break down some strategies that are not necessarily new, but for many artists a refresher is in order.
Be independent: With all of the successful examples of independent record label success, many artists are still shopping demos and breaking their necks to get signed to a major record label. The reality is that major labels are only taking chances on mega artists with huge followings and proving sales records, and even those mega artists are finding less support from the majors. For new artist, or those who have been dropped from the majors, starting an independent label is the way to go. Don't be afraid or embarrassed of being on a smaller scale, because there are bigger rewards and dollars in it for you. Take an artist who sold 300,000 albums, but was considered a failure on a major label and was subsequently dropped. Just think if he starts an independent label and sells that same 300,000, but this time he keeps all the profits. At $5 to $10 a copy...well you do the math. Become internet savvy: Sounds like a no brainer, but just because you and your music is online doesn't make you savvy. The internet has just about crippled major labels, but for independent artists who really have serious online campaigns, the internet is a powerful weapon for gaining exposure and sales. You must have a professional website, Myspace, YouTube, and other online campaigns and make yourself stand out from the average Joes. Please take note of the term professional. With an amateur image online, you're asking to not be taken seriously, plus you won't sell any songs via download, ringtones, or whatever other merchandise you have to offer.
Make your name a brand: Artist are and have been attaching their star power to products to sell everything from clothes, soda, movies, and even gold and platinum teeth. Too many think that record sales and performances are the only ways to get paid. Even on a small scale, independent artist with significant buzzes can make small fortunes hawking merchandise like T-shirts, bobble heads, g-strings, and even mouse pads via their online and offline presences. I know of a well known independent rapper who started his own magazine which promotes other independent rappers and due to his respected name, he makes good revenue selling not just the magazine, but also ad space. On top of that, his magazine is also a great way to continue to promote his own music and thus help him sell more albums. Do you think he charges himself for ad space? He's not a big star at all, but due to his imagination, he utilized his small star power to get paid.
The music industry may be in a slump, but I'm confident that with the music going away from its corporate shackles and back to its underground roots, artist will finally get back to making good music and save us from this extreme wackness we're being force-fed. Many digital music services employ digital rights management (DRM) - also known as "copy protection" - that prevents you from doing things like using the portable player of your choice or creating remixes.
DRM is Digital Rights Management (DRM); in basic terms, it's the ability to brand your digital media, either music or video, with attributes that ensure copy protection in the way in which your media is played back.
In October 2006, Jon Johansen announced that instead of breaking FairPlay, he had reverse-engineered it so that other companies could play their DRM-protected music and movies on iPods and Apple's new Apple TV. His company, DoubleTwist Ventures, would license the technology to media companies who wished to have their media playable on the iPod or Apple TV, with the protection of FairPlay DRM, but without having to go through Apple.
Not by cracking DRM control like Hymn, there are mainly other two methods to bypass the DRM control for protected music.
The first method is to burn a copy to an audio CD and then rip/encode it. Some software products take an even smarter method which allows user to burn music to a Virtual CD-RW disc and then automatically rip/encode the music stored on the Virtual CD-R. This makes the whole conversion process automatically and faster. NoteBurner is the typical example which uses this Virtual CD-RW drive method.
The second method is to use a recording software and sound card. NoteCable and SoundTaxi is the most popular software tools.
